BRICKNASTY VINLAND

Intriguing Irish collective Bricknasty drop their jazzy new groover 'vinland' alongside its phenomenal horror-inspired video. Appearing on their new 9-track mixtape XONGZ አስቀያሚ ጡብ, 'vinland' is delicate and soulful with a substantial rhythm section as buttery bass guitar locks in with effortlessly sharp acoustic beats. Guided by vocal hooks a-plenty, the accomplished offering fuses genre conventions with ease, carving out a refreshing sonic avenue somewhere between soul, hip-hop, R&B and afrobeats. Whilst the song itself will leave you comfortably blissed out, the accompanying video, directed by filmmaker Hugh Mulhern, is likely to have the opposite effect. Exploring the abstract, the grotesque and the downright disturbing, the band explain: “The vinland video was an opportunity to experiment with stop motion animating raw meat and organic material. An American Werewolf in London, Sleepwalkers and Jan Švankmajer were key reference points. The design for the worm’s face was created by combining the actors face with the depiction of Satan in the Passion of the Christ with a volcano snail in AI to create a face that looked like sex organs.” For better or worse, 'vinland' is a truly unforgettable release from a group with an uncompromising artistic vision and a demonic sense of humour. -Holly Mullineaux
